Tips on How to Prepare your Move
8 Weeks to the Move …
Get hold of a formal or informal layout of the new house, in order to help you decide what furniture and household goods should remain and which to take with you on your move.
Start compiling a list of all household items.
Research moving companies and obtain/compare prices.
Locate your homeowner’s insurance policy or contact your insurance agent to find out whether any of the items you will be moving are insured in case of loss or damage during the move.
Locate or invest in purchasing a large enough folder or file, to retain your receipts and documents relating to the move – for quick and easy access.
Contact your children’s schools for school records/transcripts and have them transferred to their new school.
Decide on which moving company you will be using and arrange the details.
Six Weeks to the Move…
Research local physicians/dentists/other health care professionals, in the vicinity of your new neighborhood.
Complete the change of address cards with your local post office.
Notify important contacts of your new address i.e. your bank, credit card companies, delivery services- such as newspaper and magazine subscriptions, any insurance agents and of course, your friends and family.
Start emptying out your closets, storage areas – getting rid of those items that you will not be taking with you on your move.
If you have the time or inclination, organize a garage sale or donate the items you will not be taking with you to your local charities. The charitable organization will likely arrange for a pick up of the items and you may be able to obtain a tax deduction.
Four Weeks to the Move …
Arrange for/purchase all of your moving and packing supplies.
If you are moving on your own, reserve the transportation you will be using during your move, whether it be a trailer, truck or other type of vehicle.
If the moving company will be packing-up for you, schedule the date and time for the packing to be at least one or two days before the move.
Collect important personal documents and records that you may need early on in your move – items such as school records; medical records, banking statements etc.
If you are making a long distance move, arrange for any necessary travel/lodging/rentals for the trip.
Start using up disposable and surplus toiletries and food items that you will not be taking with you on the move.

Three Weeks To the Move …
Contact your utility companies to have the gas, electric, water, cable, and phone lines disconnected and reconnected in your new home.
Inform the Department of Motor Vehicles of the change of address.

If you are moving into or out of an apartment building, you will likely have to contact the management to reserve the elevator for a specific date and time to move your larger items – such as your furniture.
If moving with young children, arrange for a caregiver to look after them on the day of the move.
Two Weeks to the Move …
Research the optimum way to move your pets.
Inquire from the moving company whether they take house-plants.
Get rid of any household items that are too dangerous to move, including hazardous materials.
Whether you are driving or transporting your vehicle to your new home, have the vehicle inspected and serviced before the trip.
One Week to the Move …
Arrange for transfer and/or closing out of bank accounts.
Cancel daily or weekly delivery services, such as newspaper.
Make certain that you have enough of your prescription medication to last for at least one week following the move. Your current prescriptions should be forwarded to the pharmacy located near your new home.
Coordinate payment with the moving company and arrange for any other expenses relating to the move.
Remove and close out all storage facilities, safety deposit boxes, take out clothing from cleaners/tailor/laundry services. Return borrowed or rented items such as library books, videos/dvd rental

Two Days to the Move …
If movers are packing for you, have them do so one or two days before the move.
Prepare and put aside those personal and valuable items that you will be taking on your own, such as money, jewelry, important documents.
Defrost refrigerator/freezer that you are taking with you to the new home.
Moving Day …
Be available to answer any questions, give instructions and travel directions to the movers.
Give the movers your cell phone number or contact information where they can reach you during the move.
Review the Bill of Lading carefully and make certain that you have filled in all of the information regarding your goods, before signing.
Do not hand over the Bill of Lading until you have verified. You that all of your goods have been delivered to your new destination. And any claims have been handled and proper payment has been made. NOTE: Federal law requires payment to the driver prior to the unloading of the goods, with all interstate moves.
Always retain a copy of the Bill of Lading and Inventory for your own records.
Oversee the unloading and delivery of the goods from the truck into your new home.
Once the items have been unloaded, inspect for damage or missing objects.
Any damage found to your goods should be noted on the inventory or Bill of Lading – before signing.
